D'harawal Link

Before European settlement, many Aboriginal groups lived on the NSW south coast. The area from Bulli and Stanwell Park, in the north, to Shoalhaven and Kangaroo Valley in the south was and still is called D'harawal. There were many different Aboriginal groups living in the Illawarra region. They moved freely throughout the region and shared resources with their near neighbours without fear of trespassing.

The local Dharawal State Conservation Area is a must see - a beautiful and distinctive network of creeks, including the ecologically important O'Hares Creek catchment, make Dharawal a special place to visit. Swim in the peaceful creeks and rock pools, enjoy the superb waterfalls, or ride your mountain bike on signposted trails in the park. Birdwatchers will love the prolific bird life.


INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIA - SEASONS

Hundreds of years ago, the seasons in Australia were marked by local events like sharks breeding and wattle flowering. The indigenous people had a good empirical knowledge of their local weather. Today science is finally acknowledging the validity of indigenous weather knowledge.
